Exciting news – Garmin have just announced their brand new 1040 Range, including the Edge 1040 Solar with Solar Charging!

The Garmin Edge 1030 was released way back in 2017, with an updated version (the 1030+) coming out in 2020. So we were well overdue an upgrade – and here it is!

Announced today, Garmin have just released the Edge 1040. Much like the recently updated Forerunner 955, the new Garmin Edge 1040 has a Solar option available as well as the standard Edge 1040.

Solar power will extend the already impressive 35-hour battery life (up to 70 hours in battery saver mode) even further for those long rides and big trips. (Garmin says to up to 100 hours in battery saver mode, or 45 hours in demanding use cases).

The 1040 is ever so slightly larger than the 1030+ but the aesthetics remain largely unchanged from the previous model. It’s what’s inside that counts, right?

Right.

What’s inside?

Inside the Edge 1040 are some serious upgrades. We’ve already touched up on Battery Life (which is a significant upgrade), but a simplified setup and streamlined interface make it quick to access the courses, tools and data you need to maximise your next ride.

Multi-Band GNSS

Multi-band GNSS technology means you’ll be able to find your way in even the most challenging environments. The Multi-Band (or Dual Frequency) capability allows for more consistent tracking than ever before.

Local Knowledge

Whatever your discipline of choice, Garmin have added improved ride type-specific maps that highlight popular roads and trails plus searchable points of interest to their latest computer. Whether you’re looking for a scenic set of country lanes, or ready to shred some new trails the Garmin Edge 1040 will provide you with the local knowledge.

Garmin’s new Stamina feature will tell you how much energy you have left in the tank for the next climb

Stamina

This is also the first time we see Garmin’s new Stamina feature appear on one of their GPS computers. Garmin’s new feature is designed to help you pursue your best possible results by showing you real-time how much energy you have left in the tank.  By looking at current stamina and potential stamina the Garmin Edge 1040 can measure how long you’ll be able to maintain your hard efforts for.

Paired with compatible sensors (such as speed & cadence sensors) the Garmin 1040 edge will help you take your training to the next level, and it can of course be synced up with all your favourite apps to maximise your training experience.

Overall we feel that the Garmin Edge 1040 is a worthy successor to the 1030/1030+. A range of new features and a hugely extended battery life make this an exciting addition to their lineup and the extra data/training insights will be incredibly helpful to progressing your riding!

The Garmin Edge 1040 and Edge 1040 Solar are available now on the Balfe’s Bikes website!
