bar-and-stem

•    To align the handlebars, you first need to loosen the steerer clamp bolts (see diagram above) with an Allen key.
•    Loosen both steerer clamp bolts equally, a little at a time, alternating between the two - just enough so that you can move the handlebars independently from the fork (you may need to hold the fork still).
•    Take a long straight edge such as a ruler or large spirit level and line it up horizontally with the fork blade. Make sure you use something that won't damage the paint work on your new bike. It should provide a parallel straight edge so that you can perfectly align your handlebars. See the image at the bottom of this page.

bar-alignment

•    Once you have positioned your handlebars, tighten the steerer clamp bolts, alternating between each bolt, tightening each one a little at a time, until they are secure.
•    Do not overtighten these bolts. Make sure they are tight enough by holding the front wheel between your knees and trying to turn the handlebars independently of the front wheel (firmly but not with full force). If the handlebars don't move, the bolts are tight enough. If they do move, tighten the steerer clamp bolts 1/4 turn each and then try again. Repeat this process if necessary.

pedal-fitting

•    Pedals are labelled with an L or an R to denote whether they go on the left or right side of the bike.
•    The right pedal fixes to the bike on the drive side. This is the side with the chain and gears.
•    The right pedal has a "normal" (clockwise) thread. This means it tightens how you might expect any bolt to; clockwise.
•    The left pedal, however, has a reverse (anti-clockwise) thread. This means that it tightens anticlockwise.
•    Thread both pedals into the bike by hand as far as you can go before you use a 15mm spanner to finish tightening.
•    Tighten securely but don't use full force.
