Trek Domane Gen 5 vs Gen 4 – What’s changed?
The new Domane is lighter, simpler and more refined while still providing riders with the comfort and confidence they need for big days in the saddle. Trek have achieved this through a few different changes, which we’ll discuss below.
Trek Domane Gen 5 Weight
The new Trek Domane Gen 5 is 300g lighter than the previous generation (on SLR frames), with one of the main changes being the removal of the internal storage that came on the previous model.
For the 5th generation Domane, Trek opted to remove the internal frame storage and instead include more bag mounting options. This has allowed them to reduce the weight of the bike while still providing plenty of options for storage. So you’ll still be able to take all your snacks and spares on your all day rides!
IsoSpeed Evolution
IsoSpeed was a defining feature of the original Domane, but for the new generation, IsoSpeed is no more. Instead, Domane’s frame and components have evolved, offering a lighter, more responsive ride. Removing IsoSpeed reduces the bike’s weight, while testing shows that the bike remains within 5% of Gen 4 in vibration absorption (when comparing with the spec 35mm tyres). Essentially what you’re getting is a lighter, faster bike with the same levels of comfort you’d expect from Domane.
More Tyre Clearance
Trek Domane Gen 5 has clearance for up to 40mm tyres, vs 38mm on the previous generation. This allows riders more flexibility and additional comfort/all-road capability. “Champagne Gravel” is no problem for the Domane, and wider tyres make rough roads much less stressful.
Updated Ride Feel
Endurance doesn’t have to mean boring. For those of you who prefer a more performance-oriented feel, you’ll be pleased to know that the new Domane ticks these boxes while maintaining the confidence and control you’d expect from this model family. It’s lighter and more responsive, but still ready for all roads, all day.
New Components
On all but the Domane SLR 9 AXS 1x you will find a new +20mm Riser Bar, that helps create a more relaxed position for long days on the road. The new bar is -70mm in the reach, with 9 degrees of flare for easier access and more control on the drops. The good news is, if this isn’t up your street, you can run a standard road handlebar or aero options like the Trek Aero RSL Integrated bar/stem that you would find on the Madone.
As well as this, each bike features a new round 27.2mm carbon seatpost that adds compliance and helps soak up road chatter. The seatpost comes in two offset options (5mm and 25mm), and when used on this generation of Domane, the offsets translate to 0mm and 20mm.
Modern Compatibility
The Domane Gen 5 features a number of modern compatibility features, including:
- UDH
- A removable front derailleur hanger
- 1x compatibility
- RCS headset system
- Switch Pro chamfered thru-axles
- RSL aero bottle compatibility.
It’s worth noting that SLR models are suitable for electronic shifting only. SL models can run either electric or mechanical groupsets.
