A Front Bike Light Buyer’s Guide

When it comes to buying bike lights, it’s easy to assume that brighter is always better. But the first question you really need to ask is: do you need lights to see with or lights to be seen with?

These two categories serve very different purposes:

To see lights are designed to illuminate the road ahead so you can ride safely through dark lanes, trails, or rural roads.

To be seen lights are primarily about visibility, helping others notice you in traffic, especially in urban or suburban settings.

Buying the wrong kind of light can either leave you in the dark or blind oncoming road users. That’s why understanding the difference is crucial for both safety and performance.

What Is a Lumen and Why Does It Matter?

The brightness of a bike light is measured in lumens, a unit that tells you how much visible light is being emitted. In short, the higher the lumens, the brighter the light.

But more lumens isn’t always better. A 1000-lumen light can light up a country lane like daylight, but it might be overkill for a city commute where street lights already do most of the work.

Here’s a rough guide to help you understand what lumen range might suit your riding:

1–49 lumens – Use these as an accompanying light. Great for adding extra visibility
50–100 lumens – Ideal for city use and making sure you’re seen by traffic
100–300 lumens – Suitable for darker suburbs or riding at dusk
300–800 lumens – For riders who need to see the road ahead at a decent pace
1000+ lumens – Best for unlit country roads, off-road trails, or fast riding at night

Don’t Overlook Battery Life

One thing many people forget is that the brighter the light, the more power it consumes. A high-lumen light might only last 90 minutes on its maximum setting, which isn’t ideal for long commutes or training rides.

That’s why battery life is just as important as brightness. Look for lights with multiple modes, like low, medium, and flashing, that let you manage brightness and extend runtime. Some lights also include eco modes or battery indicators, giving you more control and peace of mind mid-ride.

A Note on Real-World Use

If you’re regularly riding in complete darkness, on country lanes with no street lighting, then a single light often isn’t enough. In these cases, it’s worth using a combination of lights: a high-powered front light to illuminate the road ahead and a secondary flashing light to enhance visibility to other road users.

This setup is particularly useful for rural commutes or winter training rides where visibility is limited in all directions. That said, it’s a more extreme example. Most riders will be well covered with one high-quality front light, especially when riding in and around towns, cities, or any environment with some degree of street lighting.

The key is to choose the right tool for the conditions you ride in. Urban commuters need to be seen. Rural riders need to see. Many cyclists will benefit from a light that does both.
