The M8 is the gravity model of the M Series for weight-conscious cyclists, being stiff and tough but still offering a smooth ride and cushioning the worst vibrations, making it perfect for enduro, bike park riding or anything where peddling uphill typically precedes the downhill.
This wheelset has been tested and raced by professional athletes across the globe, to develop a product proven in competition. The M8 and M9 Pro models of the Generation 5 M Series together have podiumed at every round of this World Cup DH season.
Brandon Fairclough has said of this wheelset, “The ride quality of this latest generation sets them apart... the M8 is an incredible new gravity wheel that gives me confidence in pushing limits.”
The front and rear rims are individually designed, with the front being wider and more compliant, so that it supports comfort and tracking. The rear rim, meanwhile, is slightly narrower for effective power transfer and toughness, while both are incredibly durable.
The rims are also both shallow, meaning increased vertical compliance for better shock absorption and a better balance of compliance, weight saving and reliability. Both front and rear rims use ENVE's wide hookless bead technology to protect against pinch flats. As the rear wheel often takes more shocks than the front, the rim bead on there is substantially wider, for an extra level of support.
Not only is the M8 tough, but it delivers ride quality above and beyond that of its competitors, thanks to the compliance of its rims and their blunt leading edges. These features combined help to absorb bumps and lessen noise, while also reducing the chance of pinch flats. Meanwhile, Nyloc thread-locking inserts ensure the wheelset's brass external nipples hold firm to keep the spokes tensioned and the wheels true, even on impact.
It also features ENVE's new, sturdy InnerdriveTM J-Bend Mountain Hub, with its oversized ratchet drive system and 80 tooth ratchet (as standard) to ensure reliable engagement at 4.5°. This provides greater efficiency and is low maintenance, yet easily serviceable. Its premium-grade, full stainless steel bearings reduce drag, while its Perfect Preload system in turn prolongs the life of those bearings.
The wheelset delivers 21% more impact resistance and 73% more compliance than its predecessor, the M730, as well as 30% more impact toughness than its nearest competitor wheels.
Designed to offer ride quality in tandem with excellent durability and no failures, in a lighter weight form than the all-out downhill racing model, it was ranked highest in a blind test with competitor wheels at a team camp.
