StVZO approval is about ensuring visibility and safety, both for the rider and other road users. A bike light marked as “StVZO-compliant” or “StVZO-approved” has been tested and certified to meet strict beam, brightness, and usage regulations.
What are the key Features of an StVZO-Compliant Light?
Shaped Beam: The light beam is cut off at the top so it doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers—similar to car headlights. No “blinding” hotspot.
No Flashing mode: Flashing lights are not permitted under StVZO regulations—only steady beam modes are allowed.
Minimum brightness: Front lights must meet a minimum lumen/candela rating to be road legal. Rear lights must also meet visibility thresholds.
Battery life requirements: The light must provide continuous illumination for at least 90 minutes at the approved brightness level.
Permanent mounting option: Some interpretations require fixed-mount compatibility (vs. clip-on only).
Lens design: Must focus light to illuminate road ahead clearly without scattering.
